‘Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?

Who are you and what do you do?

Hello there, I’m Florian Aust aka Xenomorph XX121 aka Xenofaust, 32 years old and currently residing in Dortmund Germany. I am mixing many many mixes, mostly stuff from the 90s and 00s on my weekends at home or at friends places. I would not consider myself a DJ but rather a music enthousiast and fan.

How do you work / proceed?

Improvising - that’s the way I get it done. Since I have all of my stuff digitalised and put a lot of effort in categorising all of it, I start by creating a Playlist of each mix with Rekordbox which often contains whole label discographys with vibes I think fit together nicely.

Then I start mixing, at home with a Laptop and a Pioneer XDJ-R1 or at friends places usually with their Pioneer equipment. Spontaniously selecting each track by pre-listening and then creating a transition to it. Mixing how I do it takes a special state of mind and motivation which is fully used. I never plan a duration because it would interfere with motivation. Therefore my mixes have the exact length they need to have. The motivation itself is often accelerated by certain things and ways. Mostly pop cultural references like movie scenes and/or images, artwork and stuff wander through my mind, pushing the mixing process until the end of each track.

Why do you what you do?

As I said before: I would not consider myself a DJ. I am an enthusiastic fan of the music. I started mixing for the same reason I still do it - I create mixes I always wanted to hear on events and partys, but never did. My Soundcloud uploads are primarily for myself to re-listen the mixes without having to manage the data and the files. That so many people like my stuff is an awesome side effect, but never my intention.

Who are your biggest artistic influences?

H.R. Giger, Salvador Dalí, Alejandro Jodorowsky, H.P. Lovecraft, Daft Punk, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Slayer, Public Enemy to name the sources of my main inspiration vibes regarding my whole life.

Then there are the specific artists - creators of the hardcore sound.
I always had an affinity to the explorers of noises, the creators of mindblowing and tripping sounds and noises pushing the acoustic experience of man to new limits. Specially the French tend to create those dark, evil, mad, extreme sounds with those awesome vibes. That‘s why Laurent Hô and Manu Le Malin are the Gods I pray to!

Other big influental Artists are Luke McMillan (The DJ Producer), Matt Green, Stephan Scheltema (Predator), Erwin van Kan (Nosferatu) and Miro Pajic (Miro). They all created tunes that literally blew my mind away!

Speaking of Records - In my opinion the greatest records ever made in hardcore history are:

Where do you find inspiration?

My Mind creates it.
Through an eidetic memory and a slight mental condition (AS) a various amount of Thoughts and Feelings are created - the range is from strange interesting stuff to absolute madness

When is your favourite time of day to create?

It‘s a paradox answer: my favourite time of day to be creative is the Night!
